MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Thursday morning traffic on Hall Road turned into absolute chaos after a stolen U-Haul led police on a multi-city pursuit that ended in a violent rollover crash at one of Macomb County’s busiest intersections.

A 47-year-old Clinton Township woman was taken into custody following the hour-long chain of events that stretched across several communities before detonating at Hall Road and Garfield just after 9 a.m.

A Routine Morning Turns Dangerous

The situation ignited around 8:02 a.m. when a Flock automated license plate reader in Clinton Township flagged a U-Haul truck reported stolen the day before.

Officers located the vehicle within minutes and attempted a traffic stop. Instead, the driver punched through morning traffic and took off.

Parents driving kids to school reported watching the U-Haul blast through intersections while police units scrambled to contain the situation during peak rush hour congestion.

As traffic conditions worsened, Clinton Township Police terminated the active chase near Mount Clemens over escalating public safety concerns.

Even a Destroyed Tire Didn’t Stop the Driver

The pursuit didn’t end there.

Deputies with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office later deployed stop sticks, successfully shredding at least one tire. Witnesses said sparks flew from the vehicle as the suspect continued westbound on Hall Road — driving the massive truck directly on the metal rim.

Investigators with the Macomb Auto Theft Squad maintained surveillance while the damaged U-Haul barreled down M-59, weaving through packed commuter traffic.

Crash at Hall and Garfield

At approximately 9 a.m., authorities say the suspect ran a red light at Hall Road and Garfield Road.

Moments later, the U-Haul was struck by another vehicle and flipped violently onto its passenger side, sending debris across the intersection and shutting down westbound traffic for hours.

The driver became trapped inside the wreckage.

Macomb Township firefighters used extrication equipment to remove the windshield and pull the suspect from the overturned cab.

Despite the severity of the crash, officials say the woman escaped with no major injuries before being arrested at the scene. Occupants in the second vehicle were treated and evaluated, with no life-threatening injuries reported.

Major Traffic Shutdown

The crash paralyzed traffic along Hall Road throughout the morning as crews worked to upright and remove the heavily damaged truck.

Authorities confirmed the investigation remains active, with formal charges expected through the Macomb Auto Theft Squad.

By late morning, twisted metal, shattered glass, and backed-up traffic stretched across one of the county’s busiest corridors — the aftermath of a chase that began with a camera hit and ended in a rollover on Hall Road.
