ROMULUS, MI — Plans were unveiled today for Motown Sports Village, a massive $3 billion youth sports and family entertainment destination located immediately adjacent to Detroit Metro Airport. Spanning 452 acres, the project aims to become a global hub for the $47 billion youth sports tourism industry.
The 1.15-million-square-foot campus will feature a centerpiece 11,000-seat multi-purpose arena, 12 basketball and volleyball courts, and four NHL-sized hockey rinks. Beyond traditional athletics, the site will house a 450,000-square-foot indoor water park with surfing capabilities, a 96-tee golf center, an IMAX theater, and a high-tech sports rehabilitation clinic.
To accommodate the expected influx of traveling teams, the development includes three full-service hotels totaling 2,000 rooms. Motown Sports Group Holdings, Inc. has partnered with JLL Capital Markets to secure financing, with a scheduled groundbreaking in 2027 and a targeted opening date in 2029.
Local officials anticipate the project will serve as a major economic engine for Wayne County, creating up to 5,000 jobs and revitalizing the I-94 corridor. The site’s proximity to one of the nation's busiest airports is expected to draw millions of domestic and international visitors annually.
