ST. CLAIR COUNTY- The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes District has officially launched a fleet of autonomous surface vehicles to patrol the expansive waters of the Great Lakes, specifically targeting high-traffic corridors bordering St. Clair County through October 2026.
The uncrewed vessels, developed by the technology company Saildrone, measure 10 meters in length and operate using a hybrid wind-and-solar energy system that allows them to remain on station for months without manual intervention.
Each unit is equipped with high-resolution optical cameras, radar systems, and artificial intelligence technology designed for collision avoidance, enabling safe navigation among recreational boaters and commercial freighters.
Officials say the deployment is intended to significantly strengthen maritime domain awareness by providing real-time environmental data and monitoring for illegal activity along the international border.
Although the vessels operate autonomously along preprogrammed routes, they are supervised by 24/7 human monitoring teams capable of taking direct control during search-and-rescue missions or emergency situations.
Local maritime authorities emphasized that the autonomous fleet is designed to supplement existing human crews rather than replace them, offering a persistent “eyes on the water” capability intended to improve safety and security throughout the region during the busy summer boating season.
