DETROIT, Mich.— Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced Thursday that he is ending his independent campaign for Michigan governor, a move expected to reshape Michigan’s 2026 gubernatorial race.
Duggan had spent months attempting to build statewide support outside the traditional two-party system while promoting a message centered around bipartisan leadership and reducing political division in Michigan politics.
After distancing himself from the Democratic Party, Duggan launched his gubernatorial campaign as an independent candidate, arguing that many voters were frustrated with partisan politics and looking for practical solutions instead.
Throughout the campaign, Duggan traveled across Michigan focusing on issues tied to economic development, infrastructure improvements, public safety, education, and government accountability.
Duggan served as Detroit mayor from 2014 through 2025 and became one of Michigan’s most recognizable political figures during Detroit’s financial recovery following the city’s historic bankruptcy.
Political analysts say Duggan’s withdrawal could significantly impact the 2026 governor’s race, which is already expected to become one of the most competitive statewide elections in the country. Governor Gretchen Whitmer cannot seek reelection due to term limits, leaving the office open heading into the next election cycle.
Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican Congressman John James are widely viewed as major figures in the developing race, although additional candidates are still expected to enter the contest.
Duggan’s exit has also renewed discussion about the challenges independent candidates face in statewide elections dominated by the Democratic and Republican parties. Supporters praised Duggan’s bipartisan messaging, while critics questioned whether an independent campaign could realistically gain enough statewide support to compete.
Additional details regarding Duggan’s future political plans had not yet been fully announced Thursday evening.
